Germinating Tomatoes from seed Sprouting Planting Tomato seeds Peppers under lights

My little indoor cabinet germination station for germinating Tomato and Pepper seeds. 32 watt compact fluorescent Grow Lights. Roma Brandywine Lady Bug Cherry tomatoes brandy wine I got the best results from the HydroFarm Germination Station with heat mat using regular compost from the outdoor garden. The seeds i started in Jiffy Pots took 2 weeks to sprout compared to 3-4 days with the HydroFarm. Also i had bad luck transplanting cucumbers with over half dieing. Next year i will either direct sow in the garden or initially start them in larger pots.

Grow Tent #1

Putting together my brand damn new grow tent. It is a 4'x4'x7' tent made by Secret Jarden. I am currently using it for my veg area until I get some new bulbs for the T5's. I also got an additional 4 ft, 4 bulb T5 system. So it will consist of 2 216 watt T5 systems instead of doing a HPS light. I think it will work out just as well with much less heat. - (VEG) - Grown under 2 216 watt T5( each a 4 ft X 4 bulb, 6500k) - (BLOOM) - Grown under a 96 watt T5(2 ft X 4 bulbs, 3000k), a 200 watt cfl(6400k) & a 125 watt cfl(6400k) . - Strains: Sensi Star, Great White Shark, Blueberry Diesel, New York City Diesel, & Bubblegum Indo.

Start Vegetable Seeds Indoors - 3 Important Tips to Get it Right

!±8± Start Vegetable Seeds Indoors - 3 Important Tips to Get it Right

So you want to start vegetable seeds indoors and get a head start on the growing season? If you have tried starting seeds before, then you know that there is a lot more to it then simply sprouting a few seeds and putting your young plants on your window sill and hoping they'll be hardy enough to be transplanted when the weather is ready.

Let me give you 3 important things to consider when starting any plant from seeds indoors, to insure you get not only the best plants but also a wonderful crop.

Germination: The key to remember when it comes to germinating seeds is temperature and moisture. Consistency is the name of the game here, let your seeds get too wet or dry and this will affect germination. I have found the cheapest and best solution is to use a damp paper towel when starting my vegetable seeds. Simply dampen your paper towel, place in your seeds, gently fold it up and place it inside a zip lock baggie. This is will help keep the moisture even and avoid your seeds from drying out.

Timing: Let me tell you about an important lesson I once learned about the timing and starting seeds. One year I decided to start extra early in sprouting and starting my heirloom tomato plants. They started off wonderful and everything was working in my favor, until the weather decided it was going to be a very wet and cool spring. But if my young plants are indoors, what's the big deal you ask. Well my timing was off because I had counted on these plants being ready to go outside. Now the weather was too cool and wet, and my indoor tomato plants had outgrown the space I was using indoors and I was basically stuck between two worlds. The weather outside wasn't quite ready to start the hardening off process and in the end my plants become weak.

Proper Lighting: I'll be honest a window sill just doesn't cut it if you really want to start vegetable seeds indoors. The winter sun is weak and your plants just won't be able to get enough sunlight to make them healthy and strong. If you are really serious about starting your vegetable garden indoors invest in a decent grow light system. Many are affordable and as soon as you do you'll notice a huge different in your plants.

Indoor Grow Lighting - What Type Do You Need For Your Plants?

!±8± Indoor Grow Lighting - What Type Do You Need For Your Plants?

One of the most important things you need to consider if you have plants in your home is lighting. The right type of indoor grow lighting is needed in order for your plants to grow properly. If the settings aren't just right, the plants won't grow as they should.

To determine how much light they require, you need to think about how they would grow in their natural, outdoor environment. How much sunlight is needed for vegetables to grow outdoors? What about foliage plants? There are a variety of lighting sets to choose from, so if you need to make sure you order the right kind for your indoor garden or green house.

Some plants also need a bit of darkness, so you won't always need to keep the indoor lighting on. While plants can and do grow under continuous light, a period of darkness can still be beneficial. Obviously, the amount of light and darkness needed varies from plant to plant. Some need more light, some don't need very much light, and others need an equal amount of light and dark periods.

Since sunlight may not be available to you all the time, depending on where you live, indoor grow lighting will really be essential during winter months. If you have low-light plants, then fluorescent is a good choice. Fluorescent light is good for plants less than 8" tall. For taller plants, you need to consider hydrofarm high intensity light, as it can emit well over 100,000 lumens. Hydrofarm high intensity light is not only pretty powerful, it's also simple to set up and use.

Two other choices are halide and sodium. Sodiums emit light that is similar to that of an autumn sunset. The quality is primarily in the orange/yellow area of the light spectrum. They're especially useful in areas where some other light, such as halide, is already present. Sodiums are a great choice if you want to add additional light that isn't overly powerful to your plants.

Halide is extremely powerful indoor grow lighting. You can grow any plant indoors with halide - even in your basement during winter months! It's very easy to obtain halide. There are lighting fixtures available in all sizes for both commercial and residential applications. You can find some fixtures that are both vaporproof and vandalproof. This is a great option if you have enough room for a fairly large indoor green house.

Some indoor green houses and plant systems are already pre-wired and ready to go. All you have to do is plug the lighting fixtures into any standard outlet. The kits already include a variety of plants and the appropriate indoor grow lighting. Whether you want to grow vegetables, flowers, fruit, or any other type of plant, you will be able to do so with the right products and equipment.

Grow Lights - High Pressure Sodium HPS

!±8± Grow Lights - High Pressure Sodium HPS

Some of the most popular grow lights for indoor gardening are HID lights. The two best HID lights for growing plants are MH (Metal Halide) and HPS (High Pressure Sodium). For this article we will focus on the HPS or High Pressure Sodium lights.

High Pressure Sodium lights are usually used during the flowering stage of a plants grow cycle. This is because the HPS light bulb emits a spectrum that is red, yellow, and orange in color. This is going to be the light spectrum that mimics most closely the light that is produced by the sun later in the year, like fall time. This makes the HPS light ideal for plants that are in their fruiting and flower stage.

High Pressure Sodium HPS lights come in many different sizes. The most popular wattage's are 150w, 250w, 400w, 600w, and 1000w. You can find HPS lights in other sizes but the ones mentioned above are the most widely used. All HPS Lighting systems come with a ballast and cord set to run the light bulb. You will probably want to add a hood so that you can concentrate the light downward toward your plants.

When you are going to buy a HPS lighting system you will want to make sure that you get it from a reputable manufacturer. Sunlight Supply, HydroFarm, Sunleaves, and Lumatek are some of the good manufacturers. It is worth the extra money to get a HPS lighting system made by one of these guys, most also come with at least a 5 year warranty. I have personally used all of these brands, and although they have their advantages and disadvantages they are all solid products that the manufacturers back up with a warranty. You will never want to mix and match parts for a lighting system, it is very dangerous to do so and could cause a fire.

There are two types of ballast that will run a HPS lighting system, magnetic and digital. The magnetic ballasts are cheaper and more reliable, but they are bigger, nosier, and emit a good amount more heat. These have been the standard in the indoor horticulture industry for decades. The digital HID light ballast is relatively new to the market. People like them because they are smaller, quieter, and create less heat. That all sounds great, but keep in mind that they also have a much higher failure rate, and don't work well with some types of grow bulbs out on the market today. Mainly Hortilux bulbs have had problems with the digital ballast and more specifically the 1000w has had the most. I was told recently that Hortilux is finally going to adapt their bulbs to work with digital ballasts. When I stop running into people that are blowing up their Hortilux bulbs in digital ballasts I will let you guys know. For now be aware that this is a potential problem and talk with your local hydroponics/indoor gardening retailer to find out the latest information before spending over 0 on a bulb that will blow up on you. I would say that as long as you go with a brand from a reputable manufacturer that has a warranty either one is fine it's personal choice and budget that will play most on your decision.

Expect to change your HPS light Bulbs every 9 to 12 months. You may hear HPS bulbs can last up to two years, although this is correct in the sense that they will continue to emit light for two years, lumen degradation starts after only 6-9 months. So in order to get the maximum growing power from your bulbs you will need to change them out at least once a year.

Happy growing!
